Krafton, the South Korean game publisher behind Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), has firmly denied allegations of data breaches and unauthorized sale of user information in India. The company stated that an internal investigation found no evidence supporting the claims, which recently resurfaced amid ongoing legal action in Maharashtra.
The controversy stems from a police complaint filed in September 2024 by a BGMI player, alleging that Krafton India Pvt. Ltd. violated user agreements by disclosing and selling personal player data via Telegram for ₹2,000 (approx. $23) per user. The Bombay High Court is scheduled to hear the matter soon.
According to the complaint, the user’s personal data was allegedly sold without consent—raising serious concerns around data privacy and corporate accountability.
In a statement to Yonhap News Agency, Krafton’s headquarters in South Korea stated:
“We have reviewed the case thoroughly and confirmed that the allegations of data leakage and monetisation are groundless.”
Krafton clarified that the same individual had originally brought up the matter in 2023, and it was resolved at that time. Despite this, the individual has filed a fresh complaint in 2024 with similar claims.
The company also revealed that two writ petitions have been filed in the Bombay High Court, challenging the legal procedures and allegations involved.
A writ petition in India is a formal legal instrument used to challenge the legitimacy of legal or law enforcement actions. By filing writs, Krafton is seeking relief and protection against what it considers unfounded accusations.
Despite the legal controversy, Krafton continues to deepen its investment in the Indian gaming ecosystem:
- $170 million+ invested in India as of November 2024
- Acquired Nautilus Mobile (makers of Real Cricket) for $14 million
- Launched the India Gaming Incubator in 2023 to support indie developers with mentorship and up to $150,000 in grants
These efforts are aimed at nurturing local game development talent and expanding Krafton’s influence in one of the world’s largest mobile gaming markets.
While the BGMI data breach allegations have reignited privacy concerns among players, Krafton’s firm denial and legal countermeasures suggest the company is taking the situation seriously. With billions invested and thousands of users engaged, the outcome of this legal case could set a precedent for data governance in India’s gaming industry.
