In a monumental step for Indian esports, the Tamil Nadu Government has unveiled the Chennai Esports Global Championship (CeGC)—a first-of-its-kind global esports tournament initiated by an Indian state. Set to take place later this year in Chennai, the CeGC will feature multiple esports titles, attracting top teams from around the world. This initiative marks one of the most significant investments by an Indian state government in esports, showcasing Tamil Nadu’s commitment to nurturing the industry and elevating it to global standards.
The Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department of Tamil Nadu, which has been allocated an impressive ₹562 crore in the state’s 2025-2026 budget, is spearheading this initiative. A portion of this budget will be dedicated to bringing the CeGC to life, solidifying Chennai’s position as a premier destination for world-class esports competitions—just as it has done in the past with other major international sporting events.
While the complete list of game titles and tournament specifics is yet to be announced, the CeGC builds on Tamil Nadu’s previous esports initiatives, including the successful integration of esports in the CM’s Trophy 2024. In that event, Skyesports organized tournaments across multiple titles, attracting 5,000+ players from across the state.
The launch of the CeGC aligns with India’s growing recognition of esports as a mainstream competitive sport. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports included esports in its cash incentive program, a move widely welcomed by the gaming community.
This announcement also comes at a pivotal moment for global esports, with the discipline now officially recognized as a medal sport at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. Additionally, esports is set to make its Olympic debut as a standalone Olympics Esports event in 2027.
With the launch of the Chennai Esports Global Championship, Tamil Nadu is taking the lead in fostering homegrown esports talent and positioning India as a global force in competitive gaming. By making a significant investment in infrastructure and talent development, the state is ensuring that Indian esports players have the platform and resources needed to compete on the world stage.
